5 Interview Tips for the Interviewer

Listen
Listen not only with your ears but your eyes too. Check for nonverbal cues, such as facial expressions, hand gestures, eye contact, space between you and them they give. See how they conduct themselves in a professional setting. If they come off skittish or uncomfortable, then they may not be the right candidate you are looking for.

Don’t feel pressured to fill silent moments with chatter
Allow the person you are interviewing to respond fully and then clearly assess what they are saying before you move on to your next question.

Be yourself
Act as you do normally in the office and try your best to make the interviewee feel welcome. People who feel welcome may are most likely to open up more and be themselves. You want to know who this person really is before choosing to hire them.

Ask open-ended questions
Asking open-ended questions can make the interviewee think more and act on their feet. Guide the conversation with questions pertaining to your organization and to the types of people you want working for you. For example:

  • Do you consider yourself to be a creative person? If so, why?
  • What professional in this industry do you admire most and why?
  • How would you approach negative situations, such as a customer making a complaint to you about a service your company provided?

Acquire real, possible solutions
Think of something that happened to you on the job, a problem, and ask the interviewee how they would have handled that situation. For example, you own a bakery and a customer left several poor reviews on your Facebook page – ask the interviewee how they would respond. This is a real-life problem. See if they can give you a real, possible solution.
