7 Resume Writing Tips for Spring Sprucing Up of Your Resume

1. Use attention grabbers throughout the whole resume.
Develop a summary that immediately gets their attention that POWERFULLY describes you as a solution to their problems.

2. Avoid using the typical objective at the top of your resume and try an enticing career summary.
Typically, when a hiring manager looks at a resume for the first time, they are weeding out the ones who have no chance, they will give each resume about 25 seconds.

3. List accomplishments, not job descriptions.
Show what YOU DID on the job, not what the job was. (This can make a HUGE difference.)

  • Ask yourself, "What was the benefit of doing what I did?", at the end of each description line
  • Make your accomplishments UNIQUE to you, not just a list of what someone else did
  • Avoid using generic descriptions, act as if you were the hiring manager reading this
4. Use bullets when listing all of your accomplishments.

Strategically place bold and italic interface throughout your resume to better guide the reader's eye. Use wide margins and a logical format that includes a clean type and clear headings.

5. Make your resume easy to follow.
Generally, job interviewers are only scanning the resume the first time. Scanning a resume is hard if your resume is already difficult to read. It can also be difficult if it's poorly organized and exceeds 2 pages.

6. List "numbers" in what you accomplished, as in I reached top 3 in sales made last month.
A resume is designed to show your strengths and skills, not just a general bio of the candidate.

  • Don't make general claims, using too much industry jargon
  • Include numbers in your achievements, for example, interest percentages, number of employees, likes, dollars, etc.

7. Have another person read your resume before submitting it.
Proofreading is KEY. You don't want your potential new employer to be scanning your resume and discover several typos and spelling mistakes. Make sure your resume looks professional and typo/spelling error free and have a live person look over it beforehand.
