5 Tips for Calming Your Nerves When Job Seeking

Looking for a job can be a stressful time, especially when your job search has lasted a longer period of time than you thought it would take. It can be easy to get upset and discouraged while looking for a job, but that will only make the search harder and more unpleasant for you. Kmet Consulting understands that in today’s job market, it can be hard for even the most qualified applicants to stand out to employers. This is why we offer job seeking help, including resume writing, interview skills assistance, and so much more. Here’s five tips on how to keep your cool when job seeking so that you can focus on the important things (and hopefully land your dream job!).

Calm Your Nerves While Job Seeking with These Tips

Plan Things Out
It can be easy to get overwhelmed while applying for jobs. There’s a lot of different details that goes into the application process, from perfecting your resume and cover letter to preparing for an interview. To prevent from feeling defeated in the process, break down your long to do list into smaller tasks so it’s not as overwhelming. Write down everything you need to do and think of ways that you can split up tasks. For example, instead of deciding to create an entire resume in an hour, instead split it up into smaller tasks like: pick a template or design, create a header, write a professional objective, add in experience, education and references. Looking at individual elements that go into something can make it seem more doable.

Create a Schedule
After you’ve split your tasks up, assign them to a schedule. Trying to get everything done in one day is just going to leave you feeling drained and can create a negative attitude towards your job hunt. Whether you prefer a paper planner or something electronic, pick a way to organize your tasks into a time frame that will keep you on task, but won’t be too overwhelming. Great things take time, so finding a great job will likely take time too. Make sure you stick to the schedule you create! Making a schedule and not following it puts you right back where you started. Consider scheduling reminders on your phone or putting up little notes in your home that remind you.

Reward Yourself
While it’s important to be focused on your job search and not to give up, don’t be so immersed in the process that you don’t have a minute for yourself. Allow time for your mind to rest by taking a break and celebrating small successes. You completed your resume and cover letter? Great! Reward yourself with something that you enjoy, whether it’s spending some time with friends or something as simple as getting an ice cream. Big successes are usually made up of many small successes, so don’t forget to acknowledge when you’re making progress to the larger goal.

Prepare
Preparation is key to landing a job and there’s many ways that you can do this. Before you interview with a business or company, take time to think of questions that they could ask and prepare answers for them (look online for lists of potential interview questions if you’re having a hard time coming up with some). Also, don’t forget to practice interview etiquette and research the company. Before you land the interview, have someone look at your resume and cover letter and create an elevator pitch that you could give if someone asks you what you’re looking for and what your previous experience is. When you feel prepared, you can say goodbye to those pre-interview jitters and come off as more confident in the interview.

Use Connections
While you probably have some great experience on your resume, don’t forget to use connections that you may have. If you know someone that’s in your job field, ask them if they know of anyone hiring. There are an endless amount of jobs to dig through online, so getting some recommendations on where you should look from people you trust could bring up some new opportunities. In addition, if you know anyone that has or does work for a company that you’re interviewing with, ask them to introduce you to people who currently work there.
