Stress Relieving Techniques for the Workplace

1. Reach out to your support system.
Don’t let your feelings “bottle up” within you. Expressing them and venting occasionally is healthy, so reach out to your co-workers, friends, and family. Lean on those you care about in order to express your concerns. Just voicing your worries can relieve stress and better your situation. It can help you to stop overanalyzing a situation and relax.

2. Stay healthy and take care of yourself.
Sitting in an office 40 hours a week or more can be draining and it can be very easy to forget to just take care of yourself. Here are few things you should do or be doing in order to decrease stress.

Eat healthy.
Get 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night.
Exercise 2 to 3 times a week for an hour each time.
Take frequent breaks throughout the day to stay fresh – go for a walk, talk to a friend, if you live close enough, drive home and get out of the office for a bit.

3. Create positive relationships in the workplace.
You most likely see your co-workers more often than you see your family, at least in waking hours. It’s important that you get along with them and feel like you can trust them. Here a few things you can do to create positive relationships in the workplace:

Make time to listen to your co-workers when they need to vent.
Offer to go out to lunch with them.
Don’t gossip, be positive.
Show gratitude when your co-worker does something nice for you.

4. Rethink how you react to stressful situations.
It can be very easy to react emotionally when something doesn’t quite go your way in the workplace. Take a breath and take the time to calm your frustrations and think rationally before acting. For example, if you just learned the promotion you’ve been wanting went to someone else, don’t throw a tantrum, take a breath. Everything happens for a reason and maybe there’s an even better promotion out there for you, it’s just not the right time yet. Try to find the positive in that situation. You know what they say, “if it doesn’t kill you, it makes you stronger.”

5. Master time management.

Feeling like you don’t have enough time at work can be a top cause of stress. Combat this by managing your time more efficiently. Make a schedule and a to-do list. Do what you must do to get your job done in a timely manner.
