In order to get the most out of your wonderful employees, here are some tips for developing future leaders in your workplace.

1. Treat your team how you expect them to treat customers or clients.

As the company owner or manager, you are the role model. How well you treat your employees sets the example of how your employees are to treat your customers or clients. It’s important to always keep this in mind. If you are open, honest, and encouraging with your staff, it will set up the environment to be more conducive to productivity and learning. Some people are born leaders, and some learn by example.

2. Have your employee take a personality test.

A personality test can not only be helpful for your employees, but also for you as their mentor. Different people have different learning and leadership styles, and you should try to cater to each person’s needs as attentively as possible in order to provide the most positive and progressive outcome. Understanding your employees’ strengths and weaknesses will not only help you to mentor them, but it will also give you a better idea of how well-rounded your company is or needs to be.

3. Teach them how to network.

Going to networking events and meeting other professionals will not only help hone those public speaking skills, but it will also provide an ownership mentality. Learning to introduce yourself and explain what services you provide can promote a sense of confidence and comfortability in your employee’s position. Learning to make those connections with other professionals within or outside of your own industry can be beneficial in more ways than one.

4. Challenge them and allow a bit of struggle.

Great leaders are often strengthened by conflict. Learning to be creative problem-solvers will set your employees up for success in your business. Often times, employees are not challenged enough for fear of letting them fail. This lack of challenge can prevent your employees from reaching their full potential. If not allowed time or room for struggle or failure when training, employees won’t be prepared when faced with an actual issue. Allow your employees the opportunity to get frustrated! Facing unfamiliar situations and struggling through difficulties will help stimulate their creative problem solving and delegation skills.

5. Be or assign a mentor.

In order to learn how to be a leader, your employees need to see a great leader in action. It’s important for your employees to be able to go to someone who they trust if they need anything or have any questions. Having a mentor can be the best way to provide personalized guidance and one-on-one support for those future leaders. Listening to your employees’ questions and concerns can help you better customize your leadership training to most effectively help them.
