9 Tips to SHINE in Your Next Job Interview

1. Ask about their culture.
Have the interviewer explain what the day-to-day work environment is like. If the company has a culture book or something similar, ask if you can see it!

2. Only bring the essentials.
You can never be too prepared for a job interview, carry extra resumes, a list of questions to ask the interviewer, a list of references, paper to take notes on, and something to write with.

• gum
• anything else beyond yourself and your credentials
• your cell phone into the interview, or at least turn it off
• a cup of coffee

3. Don't just skim the job description.
Read the job description carefully. Determine what the required skills are and make a list. Bring the job description to the interview! You may be asked about it.

4. Don't be afraid to be yourself.
The best way to get your dream job is to not to try to portray yourself as someone you are not. An interviewer will see very quickly if you are being authentic, or trying to tell them what they want to hear.

5. Practice for your interview with a friend.
Ask a friend to roleplay with you and ask you some commonly asked interview questions. This can help you settle your nerves.

6. Make a list of things you offer the company.
Once you have created your list of required skills, create a list of your own assets and what you bring to the table. Match your assets to the required skills of the job. Bring this list to the interview and you can use the list to speak to the interviewer about how you are perfect for the job.

7. Know where you are going in plenty of time.
There’s nothing worse than running late for your interview because you got lost. Take the time to research the directions ahead of time. Also, it doesn’t hurt to make a test run and drive by the company the day before so you will know where you are going ahead of time.

8. Lay your clothes out the night before.
Dress professionally! Don’t wait until the last minute to prepare your wardrobe. No matter what job you are interviewing for, first impressions mean a lot!

9. Do your research on this company you are hoping to work for.
Do your homework on the company you are applying to work at. Your interviewer may ask you some questions about their company and you’ll want to be able to answer them accurately.
