The Dos and Don'ts of Putting Together a Fall Employee Orientation

Summer can be a busy time for companies and employees alike, with summer vacations, kids being out of school, etc. - so it's not always the best time for new employees to start, but come fall, things will likely have settled down a little more. With that in mind, our HR consulting firm is here to give you a few dos and don'ts for putting together a fall employee orientation. The Dos of Putting Together a Fall Employee Orientation

  • Do make the new employees feel very welcome.
  • Do introduce the new employees to upper management.
  • Do make an e-mail announcement that you have hired a new employee and encourage others to welcome them to the team.
  • Do organize fun ice-breakers into your orientation so that new employees have a less intimidating way of getting to know each other.
  • Do give them a tour of the facility.
  • Do encourage them to ask questions if they need to.
  • Do have all employee onboarding paperwork ready to go for them when they arrive.
  • Do have all IT related items set up and ready to go before your attendees arrive if you plan to make a presentation that involves slides.

The Dont's of Putting Together a Fall Employee Orientation

  • Don't overwhelm the new employees with too much information at once.
  • Don't take in "in-house" language that they wouldn't understand yet. For example, if you're used to talking in abbreviations that only current employees who have been there a while understand, refrain from doing that at a new employee orientation.
  • Don't put yourself in a situation where you have to throw things together at the last minute.
  • Don't forget to greet new employees with a smile when they enter the building.
  • Don't forget to give your new employees breaks throughout the orientation so they have time to walk around, stretch their legs, and breathe.
  • Don't forget to inform of everyone where the nearest restrooms are so they don't have to awkwardly ask you about that in the middle of an orientation.
